Lent 2014 Indoor Cuppers
The first annual indoor cuppers, located out in the new University of Cambridge Sports Centre, was a great success. The day started with group stages, where Penguins and ARU showed the benefit of their indoor practices to top their respective groups along with Trinity and Jesus. In the 5 to 12 crossovers a tense Downing 1 vs Downing 2 match saw Downing 2 come out on top, relegating Downing 1 to join Long Hill, Chrembroke and Penguins 2 in the plate pool. The plate went down to the wire with Long Hill, Chrembroke and Downing 1 each winning 2 games. In the end Chrembroke won out on points difference, allowing Sam Mouat to collect his first ultimate trophy as team manager.
In the top eight, results did not all go as expected. In the quarter-finals Churchill, featuring two players from the team that won indoor nationals, lost out against a well drilled ARU by just one point. Meanwhile Trinity won out a close game against Downing 2 by eight points to seven. In the semi-final Penguins 1, who starred multiple SB women and SB open 2 players, took down ARU while Jesus overcame Trinity, leaving us with two teams from the botttom half of college league in the final. The game went down to the final point but in the end Penguins 1 pulled through to take the cup.
Spirit was equally close fought with Downing 1 and Downing 2 taking the joint prize.
